Grand blanc tank plant10/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The plant in Grand Blanc was used for tank assembly,(General Sherman & General Pershing models) beginning late in WWII and ending after the Korean conflict,which is still unresolved. this plant was in production from 1947 until June 24th 1970,ending with the new Monte Carlo. After that Fisher #2 was moved to the new Van Slyke rd assembly plant which combined body building with assembly (the same as later Buick City). The Chevy in the hole site did this work until 1947. 2A built the body,with #2 doing the assembly. The north and south units, building A, B, C and E body's (firewall to decklid) for Buick at different times, with The Buick plant doing final assembly. Fisher on south Saginaw was indeed Fisher #1. We were modeled after "Toyota City" in Japan. Everything north of Leith was known as G.M. Only the factories south of Leith were known as "Buick City". Demolition south of leith st going on from 2000 to 2002. Buick City only existed from 1985 to 1999. They made the emblems and mirrors and such for G.M. It was to be used for making parts of the J-65 jet engine,but the war ended and it became a small parts plant. was originally built during the Korean war. The plant remains unoccupied to this day.The Ternstedt plant on Coldwater rd. In 2002 the building was converted to GM's welding tool center, and remained in operation until the plant's closing on January 17, 2013. After the war, the plant was utilized as a car manufacturing facility. The plant measures 452,000 square feet- all of which was dedicated to tank production. By 1943, 30.7% of plant positions were filled by women. Because the majority of the population of able-bodied men was overseas, General Motors reached out to the work force of Women in the United States. The tanks produced were the M10 Tank Destroyers, which were shipped overseas, and the Ford M10A1s, which were used for training purposes.Īpproximately 68,000 people were employed by the Fisher Body Tank Plant. It was named the third largest tank component producer during the war, contributing $12 billion to the war effort. ![]() The Plant Produced a total of 19,052 tanks and tank destroyers over the course of the war. The Fisher Body Tank Plant, a division of General Motors, was built in Grand Blanc in 1942. Grand Blanc played a significant role in the fight overseas in World War II. ![]()
